South Korea depends heavily on avocado imports to fulfil local demand. Its temperate climate with cold, dry winters and hot, humid summers prevents commercial avocado production. The average rainfall is more than 1,000mm per year and temperatures can be as low as -2°C and as high as 25°C.

Avocado imports have to first go through the Korea Customs Service. They are then tested using certain food safety protocols set by the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency (APQA). Cartons of avocado must be labeled according to guidelines determined by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. Bilingual language, which includes Korean, is required on the label. Labels must include the following information:
